In honor of the opening of the Del Mar Racetrack today and the annual hat contest, I have decided to do a little DIY derby hat post for you all! No need to spend oodles of money on a fancy hat for the races. Have fun making your own like I did!
DIY DERBY HAT TUTORIAL
What you will need for your DIY Derby Hat:
The first step is to figure out if you what colors you want to work with and get a hat. Mine is from Boardwalk Style. I went with my favorite color- purple.Ideas for materials to use on your hat:
- ribbon
- feathers
- flowers (real or fake)
- feather plumes
- net fabric
- rhinestone
- brooches
Tools you may need for you DIY Derby Hat include:
- Hot glue gun (other glues will work, they will just need more time to dry)
- Scissors
- Safety Pins and/or brooch pins
- Wire
The easiest way to apply flowers to the hat is to glue on pins or clips to the back. Pull the flower stem off and glue the pin/clip directly to the back of the flower. Allow to dry.
I added an extra bit of sparkle by gluing rhinestone and pendants to my flowers.
Next, start with adding the ribbon. Measure your hat before or bring it with you to the craft store to make sure you get enough ribbon. Arrange the materials on your hat how you might like them to look. I used safety pins instead of glue to attached the ribbon, feathers and flowers in case I wanted to change anything. For ideas you can search “derby day hats” for ideas.
Once you have the ribbon and feathers set, you can begin adding the flowers. What do you think of the finished DIY derby hat?!
