Snowmobiling and Skiing in Wyoming: What I Packed to Stay Warm with Backcountry

This year has already proved to be a year of adventure with road trips to Indio, camping in Temecula, and now snowmobiling and skiing in Wyoming! I joined my sister on her adventures in Wyoming. This trip was everything I could have asked for and more. There is nothing quite like bonding time with family and friends in the great outdoors.

What to Pack for Winter in Wyoming

I am the type of adventure seeker to always plan ahead. I research the weather, pack in advance, and overpack more often than not. These SmartWool Merino 250 baselayer top and bottom set saved me the 35-degree temperatures we experienced camping so they were the first item to go in my suitcase for this trip. The fabric is very warm, but a bit thicker so keep that in mind when laying under tight ski pants.

Baselayers, Baselayers, Baselayers…

My trusty Obermeyer ski pants that I tested out in Big Bear were the next item to go in my suitcase. These are my first item purchase from this brand so I cannot say if all of their items fit a bit snug, but I did go up a size to make room for a base layer underneath. I had ordered my sister and myself coordinating Smart Wool base layers. I just loved the intricate woven patterns of these sets and how thin they were under our snowmobiling gear. (The zip tops are now 20% off!) Honestly, if you just order a few different base layers in different weights and thicknesses you’ll be just fine in Wyoming. I wore this midweight Stoic top on the flight and was perfectly comfortable.

Don’t Forget Your Goggles

Another item that was an absolute must for both skiing and snowmobiling was a pair of goggles. (Mine are currently on sale for 35% off!) Regular sunglasses just won’t cut it. Goggles like these not only protect your skin from windburn but also help give you a clear and wide vision of where you are going. Plus the anti-fog technology is a must for keeping your view clear. Especially if you’re using a neck guard like this one to guard your neck and face against the cold winds while you’re shredding down the mountains. These neck guards are also great to double as a mask if you forget yours when you stop into a lodge to enjoy lunch 😉

A girls’ ski trip to Jackson Hole + snowmobiling in Togwotee was a definite highlight of 2021.

Last, but certainly not least. You can’t leave home without a good pair of winter boots. Every morning I liked to stuff my Sorrel boots with those 10-hour long toe-warms for those long mountain snowmobile adventures. I always carry two pairs of winter boots with me just in case one gets full of snow and needs to dry out overnight.
