Winter Wedding Guest Dresses and Outfit Ideas

Winter weddings are absolutely magical. Especially with snow all around. Last year I shared spring wedding guests dresses for all the different dress codes (FYI the specific dress code is usually written on the invitation.) Now that we are in the middle of winter, I figured it was a good idea to share winter wedding guest outfit ideas.

The good news about winter weddings is that although it will be cold outside, luckily the wedding will take place indoors. I love jewel-toned colors in the winter such as deep emerald greens, burgundy, purples, and sapphire. Darker colored prints, and luxe fabrics like velvet which is a great fabric to wear in the winter for extra glamour and warmth. You can opt for styles with sleeves and or longer hemlines for winter. Embellished and sequin styles are also great options for winter weddings. Just remember it is a wedding, someone else’s wedding and not the opportunity to be the star of the show.

Formal Winter Dresses and Black Tie Gowns

A formal winter wedding is a perfect opportunity to wear a gown. Lately, I have also been loving pantsuits with cascading floor-length skirts to accompany them. Last year I attended a black-tie optional wedding where I wore this beautiful blue MacDuggal gown. Omeed wore a traditional tuxedo and I wanted to match his level of formality with a beautiful gown. Just note, if you plan on dancing, make sure you can move in your dress and walk in your shoes. Bring a pair of flats if you’re like me and your feet tire easily. I wore this firey red dress to Elizabeth’s wedding in Italy the year before. A floral maxi dress or a high-low version like this one would also be a great option for winter weddings.

Semi-Formal

If the invitation calls for semi-formal, think knee-length hemlines, looser fabrics, office-appropriate style dresses, and pantsuits. High-low dresses are also appropriate. Here, here and here are a few looks I would consider semi-formal appropriate.

Winter Causal Dresses

Winter casual dresses consist of elegant yet a more relaxed fit. It is likely you already have something like this in your closet such as a shift or wrap dress. Something with long sleeves is a great option. They can have florals, patterns, and simple fabrics.

Here is another little tip, if it’s possible, I always have a spare dress on hand. A runner up just in case something happens to my dress while I am getting ready or at the actual ceremony. A friend of mine once showed up to a wedding wearing the same color as the bridesmaids and luckily had an extra dress in her hotel room that she could run and change.

Just remember.. if all else fails, it is always better to be a bit on the overdressed side, than underdressed. It is always one of my own worst fears.

And of course, ladies, do not wear white unless the invitation specifically says to and if you can’t dance in it and you may be tempted, better to choose a different dress.
